In the absence of any central measurement, it’s difficult to gauge which shows or films delivered to the audience on streaming, and which ones fell short. Some platforms put our numbers for their marquee properties, but the metrics vary by platform, and there's no standardisation of messaging. There are many numbers floating around (like views, audience size, watch time, viewing sessions, etc.), but little clarity.
To fill in this need gap, we started estimating viewership of OTT originals in mid-2020. Initially, these estimates were available only for Hindi and select international properties. In 2024, we expanded the scope to other Indian languages. In 2025, the scope widened further to include theatrical films premiering on OTT, and soon after, covering reality shows aired on TV and OTT.
Our year-end report, titled Top 50 Streaming Originals in India: The 2025 Story, is now ready. You can download the report here.
The definition of viewership, and the underlying methodology to estimate viewership of OTT originals across platforms, has been detailed in the report.
Our phased expansion in this area has been driven by a clear long-term objective: to create robust data, backed by audience rsearch, to answer a single, fundamental question: “What is India watching on OTT?” That objective reached an important milestone in early 2026 with the launch of Ormax StreamView, an integrated framework covering long-form content across OTT originals, GEC programming, theatrical films, non-fiction, sports, and news.
In this context, this Top 50 Originals report for 2025 is the last of its kind. From 2026, the distinction between originals and non-originals has ceased to exist in our reporting, as audience behaviour on streaming platforms increasingly transcends such classifications.
For 18 years, Ormax Media has continuously adapted its research frameworks to remain aligned with changing audience consumption patterns. Ormax StreamView is a natural extension of that philosophy - an ambitious yet considered step towards reflecting what Indian audiences are watching on OTT today.
